Sincere Thanks to Dr Jordana Pomeroy (GSAS, Art History) for a delightful gallery talk and overview of her activities as Director of Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum, FIU.
The object under scrutiny was the Lod Mosaic, a miraculously well-preserved decorative floor that once graced the reception hall of a 3rd century Mediterranean villa. It was unearthed in 1996 by workmen widening the Jerusalem–Tel Aviv road. The "Predators and Prey" exhibit (named for its lifelike depictions of exotic animals, birds and fish) has traveled to museums around the world including the Musée du Louvre in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, the Field Museum in Chicago, the Altes Museum in Berlin and The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. The mosaic is being shown here in Miami at the Frost through Sunday, May 29. Next stop after Miami will be its permanent home in Israel at the Lod Mosaic Center.
After a celebration of the glorious past, and our role in its preservation, Museum Director Pomeroy revealed some of her exciting initiatives for the future, including community outreach to at-risk youth, STEAM career awareness programs (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) for local children, landscape design to complement the Frost's outdoor sculpture garden, and a spectacular upcoming Narciso Rodriguez exhibit at the very intersection of contemporary art, fashion and design.
Columbia and Barnard alums came from near (Miami, Miami Beach, Coral Gables, Pinecrest, Surfside) and far (Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale, Coral Springs, Palm Beach Gardens, and Jupiter!) to share a relaxing Sunday afternoon of ancient Roman history, art, food and wine.
