January 17th was a wonderful confluence of musical genius, legal luminaries, food, wine and good fellowship. The virtuoso pianist Benjamin Grosvenor enchanted the audience at Gusman Concert Hall with a program including Mendelssohn Two Preludes and Fugues; Chopin Sonata No. 2, Op.35 ("Funeral March") ; Ravel: Le Tombeau de Couperin; and Liszt: Venezia e Napoli. This magical performance is one of many spectacular concerts put on by Friends of Chamber Music of Miami , now in its 60th season.
Our reception after the show was just across the street in the University of Miami Law Lounge (thank you, Dean Patricia White). Fifty of us celebrated Columbia College alum Julian Kreeger's 30th year as President of the Friends of Chamber Music. He is also a distinguished graduate of U of M Law, and has many good friends in both legal and musical circles. First and foremost is the beautiful Judge Judy Kreeger, Senior Judge Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida (Family Court).
Julian and Judith Kreeger have three grown children and a musical archive named after them at FIU . The Julian and Judy Kreeger Collection contains many early and rare recordings - for example a 1903 (78 rpm) recording by Camille Saint-Saens performing on the piano.
Shall we name-drop some more? Famed pianists Agustin and Carol Aniervas were there, as well as Alan Dershowitz & Carolyn Cohen.
Columbia Club of South Florida members Phil O'Neill, Dan Hekman, and Patricia Garbe-Morillo pitched in to help serve the wine and food, which was delivered just in time by Lan Pan-Asian .
What a fantastic group of Columbia & Barnard Alumni-- thank you for bringing along friends and family.
We look forward to seeing you all again soon!
